Sundara - Ocean Beach
Get baked! Head over to Sundara in Ocean Beach for fresh Naan baked to order as well as slow-cooked curries that bring the exotic and delectable flavors of India straight to your state buds. Try the Saag, a delightfully healthy and nutritious darkish green dish featuring spinach and caramelized onion curry that goes perfectly with your choice of chicken, mixed veggies or Paneer, the latter of which comes recommended. Beer and wine served to complement your meal. Tip: if you live in OB and the munchies hit, you're in luck as Sundara delivers.
Punjabi Tandoor - Carlsbad
Stop into Punjabi Tandoor in Carlsbad and get ready to feast on some of the best Indian food in North County San Diego. I love shrimp, especially when it's cooked nice and spicy. Try the Shrimp Vindalu, a spicy seafood curry dish featuring shrimp cooked in hot spices, tomatoes and potatoes. You can't go wrong with the Chicken Makhani, a buttery reddish-golden curry dish with chicken tandoored in a clay oven and cooked in butter, yogurt and tomato gravy. Tip: rice or naan sold separately.
Himalayan Cuisine - La Mesa
Located in an unassuming strip mall in La Mesa, once you walk inside the Himalayan Cuisine, your senses are greeted by the aromatic spicy fragrances permeating in the room, which is a very good thing. I'm not a vegetarian but I absolutely love the Veggi Coconut Curry, a yummy dish featuring mixed vegetables cooked with coconut, Himalayan sauce and spices. Be sure to order a small bowl of lentil soup and while you're there, try the imported beers from India, such as Taj Majaj lager or Flying Horse Royal lager beer.
World Curry - Pacific Beach
With a name like World Curry it better be good...it is! In fact, as the name suggests, you can choose to order made-from-scratch curries from all over the world. However, tonight I'm sticking with Indian curries. Try the savory slow cooked Vindaloo, a spicy, sweet and tangy pulled Chicken curry that begs you to order a second plate to go, it's that good! Order a pitcher of some fine San Diego craft beer and make a night of it! Tip: it can get hot in the restaurant, so be sure to cool off with their amazing homemade coconut ice cream.
