Sushi So Fresh

Tue, 12th Jul 2016

I love sushi, from Sashimi to the creatively-inspired rolls created by old school, experienced sushi chefs. Of course, the fresher the sushi the better, after all, you’re eating fish. Luckily, we live and work in San Diego, meaning we have no shortage of fresh sushi dining joints. Here are a few of our favorites! Where’s your spot?

Harney Sushi – Oceanside

When you’re in the mood for fresh sashimi, creative rolls, sushi and Japanese food fare, make your way near the Oceanside Pier and head over to Harney Sushi. Fresh is key and you can taste it with each delectable bite of a freshly cut and sliced Hamachi. For something a little different, try the O'sider #55 roll, a super tasty specialty roll featuring spicy crab, shrimp tempura, rolled in soy paper, and topped with thin slice NY strip, avocado, fried onion & jalapeno, and sweet chili sauce. This dining joint gets extra bonus points for the cool, modern interior and can get bustling fast, so be sure to make a reservation or be patient waiting, which you can do at the bar. Tip: equally fresh sushi at the Harney Sushi Old Town location.

Sushi Ota –Pacific Beach

Located in andrab strip-mall, the food fare at Sushi Ota is anything but drab, in fact, it’s easily at the top of the fresh sushi dining joints in San Diego. The varied selections of Sashimi cuts are so fresh, you’d think they had just caught the fish right before it hit your plate. It’s easy to see why this dining joint gets packed to the gills, especially once you’ve feasted on one of the Chef’s recommendations, which you should definitely try! This is as close to an authentic Japanese dining joint you’re going to get here in San Diego, so be sure to make a reservation. Find this hidden gem and bask in sushi heaven.

Zenbu Sushi – Cardiff by the Sea

Creative rolls are aplenty at Zenbu Sushi in Cardiff by the Sea. This hot spot is a great date night spot, especially on Friday’s, when live music accompanies the fresh cut Sashimi plates such as Hot Tail Yellowtail, super fresh cuts of Yellowtail topped with jalapenos, micro-greens, ponzu sauce and chive oil that seems to melt in your mouth. The dimly lit room provides the cool atmosphere and creative rolls such as the Panty Dropper, a seductive roll featuring tempura soft shell crab, spicy tuna, and avocado topped with spicy albacore and jalapeno butter ponzu sauce that will get the date night conversation started right.

SushiDokoro Shirahama – Kearny Mesa

Finding Sushi Dokoro Shirahama in a land full of strip malls is a worthy reward that you are soon not to forget, especially when you sample fresh cuts such as the Large Toro (Tuna Belly) or Sea Urchin that tastes like it was just plucked from the reef. Once you’re in motion, you can’t resist getting into the mood and vibe, and their wide variety of Sake selections, many that hard to find here in San Diego, is sure to ease your mind into the Japanese way of life.
